Bob Bowman has eight years of experience making wire art of all types. After growing tired restoring cars, his hobby for more than 25 years, Bowman wanted to find another way to keep his hands busy. He said he always had an appreciation for the more traditional art forms, but he didn’t like the fact that viewers couldn’t touch them. “I love watching people hold and feel my pieces,” he said. Bowman wishes he can get to a level where companies and people commission him to make art.

Tom Hindes, a retired shop teacher/technical writer, has been crafting Noah’s Ark replicas from salvaged high-end wood for 20 years. Early on, someone stole a set from a gift shop. After the initial anger subsided, he thought if people are willing to steal his work then maybe it’s good enough for other people to buy. The giraffes are most populate this year. Last year was skunks.
Jill and Sean Deken, both 16, from Centennial High School, already have started donating blood. Their parents and older siblings have been giving blood since they were little, so they said they’ve been looking forward to being old enough to donate themselves.
Edward Aardema restores antique wooden boats in his free time from running Aardema Wood Floors. “It’s kind of the same thing restoring floors, restoring boats,” he said. “The first time I saw a wooden boat I thought, ‘Man, that’s just a piece of floating furniture.’” Aardema sits in a 1931 Penn Yan, which took 100 hours to restore, and a 1959 Slick Craft, which took 150 hours to restore.
Blare Gooch, 12, has collected more than 7,000 teddy bears for children in Haiti, and that’s just from the Grand Rapids area. The seventh-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle School eclipsed his goal of 2,000 teddy bears in the first week. Now, there are 150 teddy bear drop-off sites nationwide. Blare is part Haitian and wants to help comfort kids there. A soccer player, Blare’s goal is to play soccer for Haiti in the Olympic Games.
